The Grand National is the pinnacle of the National Hunt season and always captures the imagination of the British betting public. From punters who bet once per year on this race only to those who follow the horses on a daily basis, the Grand National is simply THE race that everyone is talking about. From office sweepstakes to online tipster competitions, everybody seems to get involved in one way or another.

With millions upon millions of pounds wagered on the race each year, bookmakers will try their utmost to ensure that you place your bet with them. However, not all bookmakers offer the same betting terms when you place your bet, so understanding the basics of what the different options are is important if you’re hoping to get a better chance of a return for your hard-earned money.

One way that bookmakers try to differentiate themselves is in the each-way terms that they offer. Each way betting is where you place a bet that means you get a return both if the horse you backed wins as well as if it comes within a quoted number of places behind the winner. In general for a race of this size – 40 runners is the norm – bookmakers will offer 4 places each way, meaning you’ll still get a return if your horse finishes 2nd, 3rd or 4th if you back it each way.

For the Grand National though, some bookmakers offer 6 places each way and a select few offer a Grand National 7 places each way option that maximises your chances of a return.

Understanding the each way terms being offered is one important aspect of the race, however there are others to consider such as 1/4 odds versus 1/5 odds, best odds guaranteed, non-runner no bet and other offers such as faller insurance to consider, all of which are explained on this page.

The Grand National takes place on Saturday 13th April 2024 at 4.00pm BST. The race will consist of 40 runners who will attempt to navigate the iconic National Course at Aintree which at a touch over 4 miles and 3 furlongs is the longest National Hunt race in Britain.

Two laps of 16 fences await the runners and riders with 14 of the fences being tackled twice before those still standing head towards the closing stretch. Horse racing enthusiasts and casual punters alike will be familiar with fences such as Becher’s Brook, Canal Turn, Valentine’s, The Chair and the treacherous Open Ditch as the field make their way around the anticlockwise track.

Horse racing jargon reaches fever-pitch as the Grand National approaches, however we’ve summarised the most important points so that you can make the most of this year’s race.

• Win Only Bet. The most straightforward type of bet, simply select a horse and an amount you’d like to stake and you’ll win in the event that your horse wins the race.
• Each Way Bet. With an each-way bet, what you’re actually doing is placing 2 bets: one that is win-only and another that is for the horse to finish in the paying places, so your total stake is doubled. For instance, a £5 each-way bet would cost you £10 in total. The number of paying places is important as for the Grand National 7 places each way is usually offered by a small number of bookmakers as opposed to the minimum of 4 places.
• 1/4 Odds Or 1/5 Odds. Apart from the number of each-way places that your bookmaker offers for the Grand National, they also state the calculation determining what proportion of the odds you’ll get returned if your horses finishes in the each-way paying places. For the Grand National, some bookmakers offer 1/4 odds whereas others offer 1/5 odds – in a situation where you’re getting the same number of each way places, 1/4 odds pays 25% more than 1/5 odds in terms of the return you’ll receive from an each way place – so in general 1/4 odds is the best option. However, some bookmakers offer you an extra each-way place for taking the 1/5 odds so there’s sometimes a trade-off between the two to consider.
• Starting Price. When you place your bet you can choose to either take the odds that are on offer at that time OR you can choose to take the starting price which is the industry-wide odds that are applied when the race actually starts. Odds can fluctuate up and down so there isn’t a right or wrong answer here, however if you’re convinced that a horse will be heavily backed then it may be advisable to take the odds at the point at which you place your bet; conversely, if you think that your selection will get little support then you could opt to take the starting price and if its odds lengthen then you may achieved a higher return.
• Best Odds – Guaranteed. To cut through the vagaries of whether or not take the starting price or not, some bookmaker offer a ‘Best Odds Guaranteed’ feature which means that if you take the odds at the time of placing your bet and the starting price is higher, then you’ll automatically get the higher price.
• Non-Runner No Bet. Some punters like to place their bets early in the ‘ante-post’ market before the final declarations are made. The danger of this is that there’s no guarantee that your selection will actually race on the day and, if it doesn’t race for whatever reason, then your bet is deemed to be a loser. To counteract this, some bookmakers offer a ‘Non-Runner No Bet’ feature which guarantees you’ll get your stake refunded in the event that your horse doesn’t race. Individual terms may apply to this, for instance some will refund in cash whereas others will refund as a free bet, so do check the terms carefully.

Paddy Power, ladbrokes, Coral, BetVictor and Betfred all had a Grand National 6 places each way offer running at 1/5 odds as the race itself approached, with the extended place terms running from a few days before the race depending on when the individual bookmaker switched to the enhanced terms. It’s important to note that bets placed before the each-way terms were increased will have been honoured at the original 4 places each way terms only and the same should be expected in 2022.

A number of the bookmakers featured also either removed their regular new account offer in the lead-up to the Grand National or reduced their offer until after the race had been run.
